Growing up, I would spend my summers in central Mexico. My parents, brothers, and I would take the three-day journey in the family station wagon to visit my grandparents and all my relatives. And every year at the start of our trip the tradition was to wake up in the early Chicago summer morning and get on the road before sunrise.

The long road trip through four states seemed infinitely long. I remember the happiness I felt at the first sight of the St. Louis Arch only six hours later. To me it meant we were that much closer to arriving and seeing family. Finally arriving to the U.S. and Mexico border brought about a feeling of excitement and curiosity as we entered into Mexico.

There would be so much to see as we arrived into the small towns just past the border. From the narrow streets and sidewalks with passersby turning to look at our wagon topped with suitcases and with out-of-the-country license plates, to the colorful homes with beautiful old wooden doors and tall, narrow windows. It was all so exciting and so familiar.

After several more hours of driving, we would arrive into the winding roads and gasping mountainous views of the northern states of Mexico. The majestic scenery was always breath taking. When nighttime arrived I would gaze out the window and get lost in the starlit sky. These are the memories and experiences I hold true in my heart.

As part of the Mexican culture and after having the opportunity to spend my summers in Mexico from a young age, I am driven to explore and learn more about the unique designs artisans from the various regions have to offer. From beautiful blown glassware to ceramic pieces designed with fine details, I have seen the efforts that go into creating these pieces.

Our artisans create their work by hand using the same methods that have been used for years. Nothing is automated. There are no shortcuts. There is only skill, knowledge, and dedication.
